Puerto Chale is an isolated coastal village in Baja California Sur, facing a Pacific lagoon frequented by grey whales from January to April. Raw nature, mangroves, and guaranteed silence.

Puerto Chale is a small fishing village located on the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur, in the municipality of Comondú. Accessible via an unpaved track from the Transpeninsular highway, it overlooks a shallow lagoon bordered by mangroves, frequented by grey whales during breeding season. The place remains largely unvisited, with minimal tourism infrastructure—precisely what attracts travelers in search of raw nature and solitude.

What to See

The Puerto Chale lagoon is part of the complex of lagoons along Baja California's Pacific coast, a breeding and calving zone for the grey whale (Eschrichtius robustus). Between January and April, whales sometimes approach within meters of small boats. Outside the cetacean season, the lagoon hosts a wide variety of aquatic birds—brown pelicans, herons, spoonbills—and the mangroves shelter dense coastal fauna.

History and Context

The Pacific coast of the Baja California peninsula is historically linked to artisanal fishing and 19th-century whaling. The lagoons of this region—including Ojo de Liebre and San Ignacio—have been designated UNESCO World Heritage sites. Puerto Chale, further south, shares the same lagoonal ecosystem but lies outside the protected perimeter, which explains its unspoiled and minimally developed character.

Highlights of Your Visit

Grey Whale Watching

From January to April, grey whales enter the lagoon to calve and raise their young. Local fishermen offer trips in panga (motorized skiffs). Some whales, known as "friendly whales," voluntarily approach the boats.

Birdwatching

The mangrove and mudflats attract rich birdlife year-round. Pelicans, cormorants, egrets, and sandpipers are present permanently; winter months also bring migratory species from North America.

Lagoon Landscape and Sunsets

The shallow lagoon reflects light beautifully at day's end. The absence of light pollution makes the nights remarkably clear, ideal for stargazing.

Photography Tips

Golden light in late afternoon is ideal for photographing mangroves and birds from shore. On whale-watching trips, favor early morning: the sea is generally calmer and the light more dramatic. Bring a telephoto lens for cetaceans and birds. Avoid flash near animals.

Location and Access

Puerto Chale is located on Baja California Sur's Pacific coast, south of the San Ignacio lagoon. Access is via an unpaved track from Federal Highway 1 (Transpeninsular); a vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended. The nearest village with services (fuel, supplies) is Ciudad Insurgentes or Ciudad Constitución. There is no regular public transport to the village.

Nearby

  • San Ignacio Lagoon — another major grey whale observation site, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Ciudad Constitución — the nearest service town, a resupply point before heading to the coast.
  • Bahía Magdalena — neighboring Pacific bay, also frequented by whales and dolphins.

Frequently asked questions

The grey whale breeding season runs from January to April. February and March are generally the most favorable months to observe females with their calves.

The village is small and trips are organized by local fishermen. During high season (February–March), it is advisable to inquire in advance, as the number of available pangas is limited.

The access track is unpaved. A vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended, especially after rain. Check the track's condition locally before departing.

Lodging infrastructure is very limited at Puerto Chale. Camping is possible in some areas; for accommodations with services, Ciudad Constitución is the nearest option.

The two sites are several hours apart on the Transpeninsular. Combining them is feasible on a multi-day circuit through Baja California Sur, with an overnight stop between the two.
